Our Place in the Galaxy

On September 28th, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman took a stunning picture of Earth set against a backdrop of the greater Milky Way galaxy to which our Solar System belongs.  The image was taken from the International Space Station where Wiseman is stationed.

According the Wiseman the orange hue of Earth is from the sand of the Sahara Desert.  It also seems that the blue-purple swirl of the Milky Way is genuine and was not enhanced using false-color techniques.
