Napoleon (2023): Ridley Scott’s Historical Hit Piece | A.D. HISTORY WATCHES REVIEW

Napoleon (2023) suffers from criminal amounts of historical inaccuracies, seemingly in service to Ridley Scott creating a hit piece.

Napoleon (2023) is a historical epic biopic that despite its many failures, surely does not fail to provoke a reasonably strong reaction for even the casual observer or student of history. Ridley Scott – Napoleon’s director and producer – is no stranger to this genre of film throughout the stretch of his legendary career.

Napoleon: Historical Inaccuracies in Service to Character Assassination?

Napoleon may well be Scott’s most controversial, and for those who desire a modicum of historical accuracy in their historical films, Scott’s most disappointing. Indeed, Ridley Scott’s depiction of Napoleon Bonaparte in this movie could in all fairness be deemed unambiguous character assassination.

In this most recent installation of A.D. History Watches, we get down into the mud of this historical epic biopic. However, unlike many of our previous cracks at movies focusing on major historical events and figures, the historical inaccuracies of this particular title seemed to serve the purpose of making its titular protagonist appear an outright caricature.

When one steps back and evaluates this film as a whole, it is near impossible to imagine that the Napoleon depicted at Ridley Scott’s direction could even manage to conquer Candyland – let alone becoming master of early 19th century continental Europe.

The A.D. History Podcast explores the last two thousand years of world history in an innovative new way. Join hosts Paul K. DiCostanzo and Patrick Foote as they examine the past two millennia, beginning in 1 AD, and progressing forward ten years every episode until they reach the modern day. Within each ten-year installment, Paul and Patrick aim to share incredibly important, but often overlooked fascinating historic events and figures from around the world in prospective fashion; attempting to see history through the eyes and in the world of those who lived it. By identifying these sometimes lesser known - but in no way less significant aspects of history - the A.D. History Podcast endeavors to take these many disparate threads and weave a fuller, richer tapestry of true world history from 1AD to HD.
