With the death of Queen Elizabeth II this past September, we ask: Should Elizabeth II be remembered to history as “Elizabeth the Great”or “Elizabeth the Wise”? Given the late Brittish Queen’s length of reign and tremendous esteem, Elizabeth II is one of the very few where anyone can seriously ask this question.
Elizabeth II: What Does “The Great” Mean In The Modern World?
When looking back in history, there are a number of individuals who’s accomplishments were so tremendous, they have earned the moniker “The Great.” Catherine the Great of Russia, Alexander the Great of Macedon, or Cyrus the Great all have received the honorific title in question for very different reasons each.
Students of history can only truly make that determination based on the time, place and historical context a particular figure accomplished what they did. Queen Elizabeth the II is no different.
So, does Queen Elizabeth II deserve the title in question? We go deep into her legacy as the ruling Monarch of the UK, and see if the title is truly fitting based on the time, place and context that she served.
